Guacamole (or “guac” as we like to call it) is one of the quintessential foods of summer. Nothing is better than fresh ingredients freshly chopped up and mashed together to make a delicious guacamole. Once you find a really good brand of tortilla chips to pair with your guac, you have a beautiful snack duo.
How do I buy avocados for guacamole?
It’s a shame that avocados have about a 1.5 day lifespan of usefulness before they turn into a mushy brown disaster. They are a little pricey up here in comparison to what they’ve been in years past. When I saw some brown spots on my guacamole avocados that were going to be getting their pictures taken, I promptly sliced the brown spots out and carried on as usual. One day later and these avocados would’ve been headed straight for the trash.
I like to find avocados in the grocery store that are nearly ripe so I have a day to wait before I have to use them. If you know you’ll need them that day, look for a ripe avocado that has a bit of “squish” to it when you squeeze it. The softer they are, the more ripe they are. Another trick to check the ripeness is to pick off the little stem spot where the avocado was attached to the tree - you’ll get a little “window” view into the avocado to see what color is hiding beneath the skin.
For this guacamole, we used cilantro picked fresh from my herb garden. I’m planning on updating my Homemade Pesto post with the plethora of basil I have growing out there. The rest of the ingredients we used were from the grocery store, but the fresher the ingredients you can get, the better.
We found these very tasty tortilla chips from Costco. Perfectly salty and crunchy - the perfect accompaniment to guacamole.
Whip up this guac for your next party - you might want to double the recipe!
